Course Descriptions

NRA Certified Courses

Basic Rifle

This course is at least eight hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

Fee: $80 per participant. Normal Class size is 4 to 8 students.

Classes are held at the Polson Shooters Association Range at 38386 Kerr Dam Road for the dates shown.  Participants are encouraged to bring whatever materials they might prefer for their own refreshment/comfort and arrive a little early to get settled. Coffee, water and light snacks may be available/provided by PSA.

Basic Pistol Course

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting – (8+ hours) This 8+ hour course is more comprehensive than the First Steps course and covers both revolvers and semi-automatics. A strong emphasis on safety is coupled with topics including: How a pistol functions, Parts of a pistol, Marksmanship and many others.   Fee: $80 per participant. Normal Class size is 4 to 8 students. (Successful completion of this course is recognized by the Montana Sheriff’s Association.)


Defensive Pistol

The NRA Defensive Pistol course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly and with confidence. As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following: how to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm; basic principles of concealment; the difference between cover and concealment; drawing from the holster; levels of mental awareness; developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection; clearing common stoppages; use of pocket pistols; and more. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the NRA Defensive Pistol certificate. This course is only conducted by NRA certified Advanced Pistol Instructors.

Participants should have considerable practice with their pistol of choice before taking this one.  Fee: $80 per participant.

Instructor’s approval required as Prerequisite!
Normal Class size is 4 to 8 students.

The Public is welcome to shoot for a $5.00/shooter daily fee on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from Noon to 5pm from March to Thanksgiving also on special events as they are periodically offered and announced, such as NRA sanctioned events and classes.
